Join Us at the CultureLab Emerging Practice Seminar on April 29

March 30, 2011

CultureLab, a partnership between the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago and a consortium of leading arts consultants from the U.S., U.K., and Australia, is coming to Chicago for a public exploration of new practices in the cultural sector. Slover Linett partners Cheryl Slover-Linett and Peter Linett are proud to be members of CultureLab, and we invite you to join us for a stimulating, participatory day of ideas.

CultureLab’s annual Emerging Practice Seminar is a focused exploration of promising new practices in the international cultural arena. Each year, the group gathers in Chicago to take stock of recent developments and evolving issues. The two areas we’ll focus on in this year’s seminar are:

  • Uses of technology in audience engagement (morning program)
  • Revenue management and dynamic pricing (afternoon program)

For each topic, the CultureLab members will present a range of case studies, then facilitate discussion groups with attendees.

This year’s program will also include a lunchtime debate on the role of mobile devices in theatres and concert halls with Martha Lavey, artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre, and Alan Brown, principal of WolfBrown and co-founder of CultureLab.

“The Emerging Practice Seminar is a great opportunity to delve together into the most promising new strategies in our field,” says Peter Linett. “There’s no substitute for sitting down with colleagues from around the field to wrestle with what’s changing and how the sector should respond.”

The seminar is open to all Chicago-area arts and cultural groups. A complete schedule and registration page will be online next week. To receive an invitation with a link to register, please send an email to cpc@norc.uchicago.edu.

Registration is $45 and includes lunch. Space is limited, so please plan to register early.

Alan Alda warms up science communication with the Flame Challenge

 »

How would you explain flame — what is it? what’s going on in there? — to an 11 year old? I grew up watching Alda play an army doctor on M*A*S*H, but his acting and PBS interviewing work have led him to some real-world questions about how science is conveyed to us laymen. In partnership with Stony Brook University, where Alda teaches scientists how to improvise and “be more authentically themselves” with the public, he has organized a contest for scientists and anyone else who wants to enter. Submissions are now being judged...by an 11 year old near you.
