We’re proud to welcome MCASD to the Slover Linett client family. Next month, we’ll begin a three-year, multi-method research process to help the museum deepen its relationships with audiences through innovative programming at the institution’s two locations, downtown San Diego and nearby La Jolla.
The museum’s management team has been developing the innovation initiative with support from the James Irvine Foundation’s Arts Innovation Fund. Our research will begin by exploring how the museum’s visitors and members perceive the two locations and identifying opportunities to both expand participation and deepen engagement through an emphasis on experimentation and process — a “lab” for artistic and museum practice.
The research will include qualitative phases, such as focus groups and in-depth interviews, and quantitative phases, such as visitor and member surveys or online. It will also include cultural consumers who visit other San Diego museums and arts organizations but haven’t yet discovered MCASD.
Slover Linett’s senior associate for museums, Sarah Lee, looks forward to working with the MCASD team. “They’re asking great questions about their audiences,” she says. “How do people engage with contemporary art? How do they engage with artists and the art-making process? How do they perceive the relationship between the art of the past and the art of the present moment?”
Lee and partner Peter Linett are also pleased to be conducting research in support of an initiative funded by the Irvine Foundation. “The Arts Innovation Fund is designed to foster experimentation in really thoughtful, strategic ways,” says Linett. “Our firm is deeply interested in innovation in museums and the arts, so this is an exciting opportunity for us.”
